The Senate this morning voted 74-22 to bring a
new version of S. 1789, the Senate postal reform bill, to the floor. The strong procedural vote in support of the "substitute" measure reflected the desire of many Senate lawmakers
to deal with the Postal Service's financial crisis. Sixty
votes were needed for cloture, permitting Senate consideration of the measure to proceed.

President Atkins this afternoon
sent the attached letter to all Senators, urging the following actions on these key postal-related amendments to S. 1789, set for action on Tuesday,
April 24:
Vote
“YES” on SA 2000
– The Lieberman-Collins-Carper-Brown managers’ amendment would improve postal operations by providing the Postal
Service with immediate financial relief, preserve First Class Mail overnight local delivery and promote greater innovation
within Postal Service products and operations. (If amendments are ultimately adopted that adversely affect the Postal Service
or our members, we will oppose SA 2000, as amended.)
Vote
“NO” on SA 2001
– The McCain amendment would dramatically cut postal services, create additional bureaucracy and pave the way for privatization
of the Postal Service.
Vote
“YES” on SA 2042
- The Casey amendment would preserve current delivery standards for four years and prevent a slow-down in service.
Vote
“YES” on SA 2043
– The Udall amendment would preserve six-day delivery, with a CSRS overpayment offset.
Vote
“YES” on SA 2049
– The Akaka amendment would clarify existing law regarding the timing of pay consultation for postal supervisors and
postmasters.
Vote
“YES” on SA 2080
– The Snowe amendment would require AMP studies to include a plan for reduction of facility capacity without closure
and provide PRC review to assure appropriate study methodology and accurate costs.
Vote
“YES” on SA 2082
– The Durbin amendment would prohibit the closure or consolidation of any facility with an AMP, conducted after June
1, 2001, that does not reflect significant cost savings or efficiencies.
Please
send this email on to your states, leadership and legislative teams and urge them to IMMEDIATELY contact their Senators to
urge the same action on these amendments by CLICKING HERE.
